Three Chartist poets from Newport have been identified by Dr David Osmond when he was researching. Two of the poets used pseudonyms.
“Iota” had 9 sonnets and one longer poem published in the Northern Star Chartist newspaper in the 1840s. He always used his pseudonym, but gave his address as Gold Tops. The only known Chartist living in Gold Tops at the time was Robert Brown. It may be that he used the pseudonym “Iota”.
“Aneurin” had one poem published in the Northern Star – his true identity is still unknown.
Edward Thomas had verse published in the Western Vindicator before the Newport Rising.
